Bart Koes is a Clinical Epidemiologist and head of research at the Department of General Practice, ErasmusMC since 1999.  Since April 2018 he holds a part-time position as Professor of Musculoskeletal Disorders in Primary Care at the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark.  He is member and chairperson of various guideline committees in the field of back pain and sciatica.

His projects at the department include large scale randomised clinical trials. The other studies include observational (cohort) studies and systematic reviews and meta-analysis. Most studies concern musculoskeletal disorders in primary care.  He has a great number of  publications related to musculoskeletal disorders in primary care and his papers  are widely cited.  It makes him one of the most published researchers in the field of low back pain and sciatica.
